Monkey’s Paw Essay

Three Wishes But A Lifetime Of Pain

What if only three wishes could change everything. In “The Monkey’s Paw” by  W.W Jacobs Sergeant-Major-Morris just came back from India. While there, he found a cursed monkey’s paw that can grant three wishes. He warns Mr. White not to take it, but he does even though he was warned not to. A decision the character makes in the story that changes the outcome is when Mr. White takes the monkey’s paw from Sergeant-Major. This event starts the whole story and eventually starts Mr. White’s son’s death.

The first way that Mr. White revealed his real character was when he took the Monkey’s Paw from Sergeant-Major. “He took the paw, and dangling it between his front finger and thumb, suddenly threw it upon the fire. White, with a slight cry, stooped down and snatched it off.” (Jacobs 39)

Sergeant-Major knowing what the monkey’s paw can do threw it on the fire, he warns Mr. White about the paw. Then Mr. White takes the paw from the fire going against Sergeant-Major’s advice. When Mr. White takes the Monkey’s Paw off the fire, he shows us how he is impulsive and does not think before he makes a critical decision.

Another way Mr. White shows us his true character is when he wishes for money instead of something sensible. “‘ If you must wish,’ he said gruffly, ‘wish for something sensible.'” (Jacobs 47). Here in the story is an excellent example of Mr. Whites’s real character. Sergeant-Major was warning him about the monkey’s paw. Mr. White showed us how he was thoughtless; he wished for money even though he was warned not to. That portion of the story shows us that Mr. White is thoughtless and does not think about the consequences.

The final way that Mr. White reveals his real character is when he wishes his son back dead. “He heard the creaking of the bolt as it came slowly back, and at the same moment, he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish. The knocking ceased suddenly, although the echoes of it were still in the house.” (Jacobs 144) Here in the story, Mr. White shows us his character development. Mr. White showed us how he has changed throughout the story when he wished his son back dead knowing that if he did he would be gone forever. Before his son’s death he was impulsive but by the end, he was responsible and showed us how he learned from his past mistakes and made the responsible decision to kill his Son.

A decision the character makes in the story that shows us Mr. Whites’s real character and changes the outcome is when Mr. White takes the monkey’s paw from Sergeant-Major. Making that decision shows us that Mr. White is impulsive and thoughtless. Like many people, Mr. White eventually learned his lesson. The moral of the story is always take others advice before making your decision. For some people to learn their lesson, they need someone to help them, but for Mr. White, it was his son’s death that taught him. Never disregard others advice it could save you from a mountain of pain.

Blogging

Over the past few months I have loved blogging. Through the good and the bad it has been a pleasure blogging. I loved all the fun challenges no matter if they were hard or easy. One way I liked blogging was it was more enjoyable than just writing an essay or a report about a book. Although writing reports is great for learning and stating what you know it can get boring. Blogging had fun challenges that engaged me and also challenged me. I loved getting feedback on what writing really amused people and learning how to better my writing. I also enjoyed how to set up a blog and how to add things to it. I will definitely keep blogging and keep becoming a better writer.

Christmas Cards

Since it’s almost that time of year again I figured I would talk about my family’s Christmas cards but mainly the bad ones. Of course the cards when I was a baby were bad because I was terrified of Santa. So the next Christmas my family decided to just take Christmas pictures at home so i wouldn’t be scared. We did that for a few years it was okay but then one year I had my back to the camera and my Mom just used it because she didn’t want to deal with taking another one. Then the next year I started crying so we took a picture with me balling my eyes out. Now my family doesn’t do Christmas cards for obvious reasons but it was still a fun tradition.

Paddle Boarding

One of my favorite things to do is paddle board. I live right on a river and paddle board every week in the summer. I usually like to paddle board when it’s slack tide. That means when it’s changing from high tide to low tide and there’s no current. When you go out when the current is strong you have to be careful that you don’t get stuck. I have gotten stuck many times and had to climb up on the marsh. I always remember never to panic.

Basketball Poem

Basketball

Jump ball the referee takes the ball

2 bounces then he throws it up

The ball is hit back to me

I start dribbling down

I let my team get set up

“Iso! Iso!”

I want the ball just me and my defender

I drive then stop

Between the legs and behind the back

I dribble to the opposite block

I see them going to double me

Spin move

“Ankles” Everyone shouts as he falls down

I hear the crowd “Shoot it!”

I take one more dribble and fade away

I jump so high like I’m imitating Kawhi

Swish “And one!”
